Dancing with the Shrub
Lesson 48

It seems so obvious. Stem cells of discarded embryos would otherwise be waste. Using them in research proposes a strange opportunity created out of another strange opportunity. It is said that stem cells may be induced to become any specialized cell of the body; brain cells that may cure Alzheimer's Disease, heart muscle cells for a plethora of heart maladies, and many others. Scientists speak of the potential of stem cells in hushed voices and hopeful expectations.

The Shrub went on television, taking time from his month-long vacation, to ineptly explain "his decision" regarding the use of federal funds in stem cell research. The decision was no decision. It was a middle-of-the-river statement which both went too far and not far enough, depending on ones point of view.

Worldwide, we are told, there are 16 separate stem cell lines that have been developed from former embryo research. There is also several other sources of similar cells, not involving an embryo. The Right To Life viewpoint sides with the Catholic Church in statement that all embryos are living human beings. There are, according to others, several hundreds of differences in the human body that these 16 lines may not provide for in coming research.

The Shrub covered his conservative butt, but not very well, while attempting to not appear stupid. On both counts he has failed. He appears the buffoon streaching to appear Presidential.
